Project 1 – mixed media project
Aim: experiment with a variety of mixed media in sketchbooks and other ways.
currently reading adn researching on the period for the project.
Project 2 – currently researching methods for a homemade machine to house the bits for the project. Sourcing tools required and seeing if I can replace them with household objects.
Project 3 – currently creating a range of sketches of the landscape and working with different mediums. Charcoal, pencil and paint is being explored, with charcoal blocks being favoured in XL size at the moment.
A3 sized charcoal drawings being produced with the aim to create 12. These can also be scanned and put into a booklet format, but based on the contrast so far, it feels better to keep them in a picture context to be framed.
Other updates:
My initial idea was to go for a dissertation, but that has now been changed to a critical review. I’m leaning towards Hilma af Klint and her abstract art. The research question has yet to be confirmed.
Why have you chosen these practice and research projects?
I have always wanted to be an artist, and the sequential art form appeals to me the most. Storytelling through visual means appeals to me so much. I love the way that a panel can express so much.
The projects are a mix of aims. There is the main aim, which is to produce a comic to a standard I’m happy with using a character I’ve had for a while. There is the aim of pushing myself out of my comfort zone with this project and the other two projects. Project 2 is more like a science project which I’ve been eager to try out. Project 3 was an idea formed in second year, and I felt that they were worth exploring further.
How do these projects connect to my practice and research?
My practice right now seems to be leaning towards collage and mixed media based in sequential art forms. I’ve scaled up in some instances and enjoyed the move to charcoal and paint, which was surprising to me.
All 3 projects push me out of my comfort zone and ask me to explore sequential art in a mixed media way, rather than in the digital format. I like non-traditional formats of telling stories. Lynda Barry has a very liberating way of expressing a story. As a result of the influences and inspirations around me, I’m aiming for a mixed media comic. It isn’t set in stone, but at this point, that is the aim.
